Opinion Piece – Who’s a MakeUp Artist?

Opinion Piece – Who’s a MakeUp Artist?

Recently one of the well known, incredibly talented women I follow on instagram posted a meme of sarcastic Willy Wonka.

As you can expect it created a shit storm. I’m not going to dive into the dogpile that was the comments, I am going to say why I disagree with her.

For starters MUA stands for Make Up Artist. Anyone who considers what they do art can call themselves this. Art is a subjective matter and therefore it doesn’t matter if the only face you do is your own. If you’re doing art using make up, you’re a MUA. You don’t need a professional to call yourself an artist. You can spend all day working in a shop or being a stay at home mum, if you then create art on your face, you’re a MUA. These are the people the meme targets. It’s wrong.

Now she freely admitted afterwards that this was a dig at, and I quote ‘instafamous people who think 384573828 followers, overly edited selfies and endorsements from big companies who only care about the follower count make them a pro.’ Okay so not the people above. The problem here is some of them she’s aiming at are professional. A professional is someone who makes a living doing what she states above. There are people that manage to do this. They can make a living off only doing their own face and posting it to the internet. Some of them have even managed to create their own make up line. So she’s wrong. They are pros. It might annoy her intensely but that doesn’t make them not pros.

So do you agree with me? Or her?

Beauty UK 2014

Beauty UK 2014

So you may not know that a couple of weekends ago I attended the Beauty UK Show. It’s a trade only show that showcases the best of beauty, nails, hair and holistic health. It’s held in the NEC and takes up three halls.

I caught the train there and it was a long walk but very much worth it. I actually didn’t get as much as I thought I would. There were plenty of things to see, speakers to listen to and brands on offer but I went with my mum (who’s a reflexologist) so I was a bit tied up with what she wanted to do and see as well as what I did.

One of the main reasons I went to the show was to catch up with NYX and see if they had the Macaron collection in. The answer to that is no, sadly they have only just submitted it for tests for the European market and we have a lot more rules. Instead, I did pick up a couple of new jumbo pencils. I also picked up the NYX box of shadows. I don’t actually have any NYX shadows so I thought this would be a good test of the quality. It’s currently on sale on the NYX website for £28 (originally £35), but at the show, it was just £16.50. A real bargain.

I picked up some nail decals. As I’m in the process of swatching all my polishes I need something to decorate them. These are water transfers so it’ll be interesting to play with them.

Lastly, I also picked up a few brushes from Royal Langnickel. It’s a brand I often see at the trade shows. They’re synthetic brushes, so vegan and cruelty-free. I decided on a travel set since I wanted two of the brushes in the set and it was almost the same for the set as it would have been for the brushes. Since these are for personal use the shorter handles are always an advantage. I also got a bent eyeliner brush. I can’t wait to see how this performs.

It’s a good day out and there are some great speakers. I wish I’d had a chance to spend the day. Do make sure you take cash, do take good shoes and do take your own food. It was expensive and not very good. I will head out next year and try to get there for both days. Well worth it if you’re in the trade.

IMATS 2013 Video and Pictures

IMATS 2013 Video and Pictures

My little video of IMATS. The sound when I film myself isn’t great but I did put captions there instead!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As you can see I also took a lot of pictures. IMATS is a great place to go if you’re a working artist and looking to top up your kit or improve your skills or even network. It’s less good for those of us that are not but there’s still fun to be had and connections to be made.

Welcome to Fake On The Outside

Welcome to Fake On The Outside

Hi, there my lovely. Welcome to Fake On The Outside, a blog run by me Crimson Feather (also known in real life as Claire).

I am a cruelty-free blogger focused on Vegan cosmetics. There will be plenty of posts on project panning as I’m also looking to get the best out of my collection and help you to get the best out of yours.

Makeup and blogging are my passions, which is why I’m doing this for fun. I promise you my honest opinion on the things I buy and if I ever receive PR the same applies. I’ll also mark it as Press Sample in the tags and AD if it’s a paid for blog post.

There will be new posts every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

I’m a dog mummy to a lovely rescue dog called Finn. He’s half Springer and half whippet with all the bouncy parts of both breeds. I wouldn’t have him any other way, he’s my reason to get out of bed and get outside. Nothing makes me happier than making him smile.

I come from the land of concrete cows (formally known as Milton Keynes, England). I’ve been among other things and Auxillary Nurse, a Chocolatier and a Hair Dresser. I’m currently a Bingo Caller working long 12 hours days.

So that’s all about me. Tell me all about you!
