At this point, I have to state I can’t hate anyone who’s sick of Harry Potter. It’s a cultural phenomenon at this point in the same way Star Wars is. I myself who stayed up to buy the books as soon as they came out, as someone who went in costume to the films I am getting a little tired of the way it’s saturated our culture.
But then again it means we get things like these palettes from The Wizarding World Exclusively Boots.
Sadly for me, that’s really where the joy ends.
There are of course 4 palettes, one for the Gryffindors, Slytherins, Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs. They cost £12.50 each and are currently available at Boots in the Christmas 3 for 2. They have 6 x 1.2g of shadow and expire 12 months from opening. They are not vegan-friendly. Ingredients are listed towards the end of the post.
The problem with these palettes is not so much the design. It’s simple and I prefer the cardboard packaging, it’s much more environmentally friendly. It’s more along the lines of the shadows themselves. Of course, each palette is really limited by the fact they’ve tried to stick to the colours of each house.
The Slytherin Palette is also very limited in the fact that all of them bar one shadow is a shimmer shade. That happens to be the black shade. Now I am a shimmer fan but it’s not really practical for everyday use. It would have been better to have at least one more neutral in a matte colour.
There’s also a strange combination of cool and warm in the palette. A very cool toned silver with a golden toned neutral and a golden shift on a warm green. It’s not the best combination.
It’s also not really great unless you’re of the beige persuasion.
Then there’s the performance of the shadows themselves.
They finger swatch very well but I found them quite hard to pick up on a brush and then blend on the eye. They foil incredibly but as I said they’re all shimmer so that’s really not practical.
In all, I’m not a massive fan of this palette and have been unable to swatch the others. For me, it’s a nice gift for your Harry Potter fan that’s kinda into makeup. If they’re really into it, then pass and go for the brushes.
