So for those of us that either don’t live in the USA, want a vegan version or just don’t like Lime Crime’s morals I’ve got you a dupe for their much praised Red Velvet Velvetines.
As promised here’s the comparison post between Red Velvet by Lime Crime and MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer in Reckless.
MUA’s lip lacquer is described as long lasting and kiss proof, these glide on with the ease of a gloss drying in seconds to a matt velvety texture.
Lime Crime describes Velvetines as liquid lipstick that goes on like a gloss and dries to a matte, touch-proof finish.
The main differences are the price, quantity and the product itself.
- Costs £13.50
- 0.11 oz of product
- Liquid formulation
- Costs £3.00
- 12 ml of product
- Cream formulation
Google tells me 0.11 liquid oz is 3.12 ml. So if that’s correct, there’s a whole lot more in the MUA Luxe. Even more so than my previous recommendation Matt Me by Sleek Cosmetics.
They’re both long stay lipsticks and both tend to last as long as each other. The down side is they’re both very drying on the lips but you do get that with all long stay lip colours. The cream formulation is slightly more forgiving than the liquid version on dry lips but not by much at all. MUA Luxe also doesn’t tend to smudge in the same way as Velvetines do. MUA Luxe tends to come off in little balls, so it doesn’t smudge but once it starts to come off, it’s quite annoying.
They both have longer drying times than a few seconds but the time is comparable. Both tend to bleed a little and need a good liner.
Velvetines contains petrolatum. Petrolatum is not a vegan ingredient. So despite claims on the packaging it’s not a vegan cosmetic.
Now for the colours. Velvetines currently only come in three colours. MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer’s come in a range of five. There is a great match for Red velvet in this range and possibly a good match for Suedeberry and Pink Velvet.
MUA’s Reckless is also a slightly deeper red than Red Velvet. Please excuse the shine, they were still slightly wet when I took this picture.
So if you’ve been dying to try Velvetines but couldn’t stand buying from Lime Crime or just couldn’t afford it, here’s a nice alternative.
